Marine oil spills refers to oil that is released into the ocean and include among others releases of crude oil from tankers and heavier fuels used by large ships such as bunker fuel, or the spill of any oily refuse or waste oil.

Spills may take months or even years to clean up.

The ODME systems are responsible for keeping the environment clean and safe from the hydrocarbons contained in the waste waters of the ship’s slop tanks.

Those hydrocarbons are collected inside the slops tanks during the washing procedure of the cargo tanks. So when the ship is discharging the waste water contained inside the slop tanks back to the sea, the Oil Discharge Monitoring Equipment (ODME) makes sure - by continuous and on line monitoring - that the water discharged back to the sea is clean and free of any Hydrocarbons.

This is an electronic safety device used to connect the DP transmitter located in the Hazardous Area with the ODME Controller or Calculator located in the Cargo Control Room.
